The 2014 election cycle has started.. Voting Precinct chairs/Judges and Candidates have until 6:00 PM on December 9th to submit the “application to be on the primary ballot” to the Republican or Democrat Party Chair. Freestone County has 15 Voting Precincts divided into 4 Commissioner Precincts. The Republican and Democrat Primaries will both be held at the Voting Precinct locations on March 4th, 2014.

Democrat or Republican? Texas residents are not “Registered Republicans” or Registered Democrats. Voters simply choose every 2 years which primary they wish to vote in and by doing so they are members of that party until the next primary. There are 3 things that you can’t do. (1.) Be a Candidate in one party and vote in the other Party Primary. (2.) Sign a petition for one Party and vote in the other Party Primary. (3.) Vote in one Party Primary and the other Party runoff. There are no fees, oaths etc. to be a member of a Party. Voters may vote for whichever candidate they want in the November election, regardless of Party.

I have been informed many times of the fallacies of the two party system but no one has convinced me of a better system. I am confident that “Party Politics” doesn’t affect County government policy. Party does have a large presence in State and National Government.

I would like to thank all of the Candidates for putting their names on the ballot. Political campaigns can be mean and the best candidate doesn’t always win. Please stay positive and pick up your campaign material after the election. Thanks also to the Voting Precinct Judges and workers who spend a 14 hour day for meager pay to hold the election.

I will provide more information on candidates and the election on The Freestone County Republican web page, www.freestonegop.com, as it becomes available.
